Microsoft Urges Users to Upgrade to IE 8

Microsoft is urging web users to upgrade from Internet Explorer 6 to Internet Explorer 8 which was released in March this year. Now, with the holiday season just around the corner, Microsoft says users should upgrade to IE 8 for "safer" shopping. Also, a live bookmark webslice showing a website in small pane for eBay was released for this season specifically.

As per Net Applications' statistics for November 2009, IE 6 continues to be the widely used web browser followed by IE 8 and then IE 7. New browser versions from rivals Mozilla Firefox, Apple's Safari, Google Chrome and Opera are slowly but steadily gaining the market share.

Microsoft itself admitted the security flaws in IE 6 and IE 7 web browsers recently and hence urges users to upgrade. Nonetheless, just like we need to upgrade from obsolete or old technology, we've got to upgrade the browsers too. Earlier, this year, popular video sharing website YouTube dropped support for IE 6 as well in order to keep up with emerging web standards.

This is the video that asks used to upgrade their web browsers from IE6:

To download IE 8 for your system, head to this link. Note that Windows 7 bundles the IE 8 browser by default.  However, we hope Microsoft has passed on the message to several banking websites and other folks as quite a few Indian banking and government services websites support IE 6 only. If you're into online banking, make sure the bank's website supports other browsers. If not, better make an account with a bank that keeps head to head with technology.

Microsoft Makes Gains With Bing, Clashes With Google

Microsoft Corp's Bing search engine won more market share from rivals last week, according to new industry data released on Wednesday, but still trails Google Inc and Yahoo Inc considerably. Challenging market leader Google - which in turn is looking to break into Microsoft's core software market - is a long-term project, said Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer. "We have had some very good initial response," Ballmer said at a conference in Detroit. "I don't want to over-set expectations. We are going to have to be tenacious and keep up the pace of innovation over a long period of time."

Microsoft grabbed 12.1 percent of U.S. Internet searches for the work week June 8-12, according to data released by industry tracker comScore earlier on Wednesday. That is up from 11.3 percent in the June 1-5 period - the week in which Bing was launched - and up from 9.1 percent the week before that. For comparison, Google got 64.2 percent of U.S. searches in April, the last full month for which figures are available, followed by Yahoo with 20.4 percent and Microsoft with 8.2 percent. Analysts and investors are keenly awaiting data for all of June to see if Microsoft can hold onto early gains. Ballmer acknowledged the tough task of beating Google, which he referred to as "a big dog competitor".
The world's largest software company has long been determined to play a major role in the lucrative Web search market after watching upstart Google take a stranglehold. At the same time, Google is looking to take advantage of its popularity to launch software that competes with Microsoft's, which has created a new source of tension between the two companies. Microsoft ratcheted up that tension on Wednesday by claiming that Google's new Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook software - which allows users to share data between their Outlook e-mail and Google's online offerings - disables a key function in Outlook. "The installation of the Google Apps Sync plugin disables Outlook's ability to search any and all of your Outlook data," Outlook product manager Dev Balasubramanian wrote on a Microsoft blog. "It is also important to note that uninstalling the plugin may not fix the issue." The problem, though relatively unimportant to users, represents a crucial struggle between Microsoft and Google for e-mail customers. Google's new product allows business users to continue using Outlook for email and other tasks, but the back-end functionality and data storage moves to Google, instead of residing on a company's internal servers running Microsoft software. Google did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Orthodox Jews Launch "Kosher" Search Engine

Orthodox Jews Launch "Kosher" Search EngineReligiously devout Jews barred by rabbis from surfing the Internet may now "Koogle" it on a new "kosher" search engine, the site manager said on Sunday.
Yossi Altman said Koogle, a play on the names of a Jewish noodle pudding and the ubiquitous Google, appears to meet the standards of Orthodox rabbis, who restrict use of the Web to ensure followers avoid viewing sexually explicit material. The site, at www.koogle.co.il, omits religiously objectionable material, such as most photographs of women which Orthodox rabbis view as immodest, Altman said. Its links to Israeli news and shopping sites also filter out items most ultra-Orthodox Israelis are forbidden by rabbis to have in their homes, such a television sets. "This is a kosher alternative for ultra-Orthodox Jews so that they may surf the Internet," Altman said by telephone.
The site was developed in part at the encouragement of rabbis who sought a solution to the needs of ultra-Orthodox Jews to browse the Web particularly for vital services, he said. Nothing can be posted on the Jewish Sabbath, when religious law bans all types of work and business, Altman said. "If you try to buy something on the Sabbath, it gets stuck and won't let you."

Opera Says Microsoft EU Browser Offer 'Not Enough'

Opera Says Microsoft EU Browser Offer 'Not Enough' Norwegian browser maker Opera ASA said on Friday that Microsoft's plan to ship its Windows operating system in Europe without its Internet Explorer web browser was not enough to restore competition.
On Thursday the world's top software maker Microsoft, countering pressure from European regulators, said it plans to ship the newest version of Windows in Europe without its Internet Explorer web browser. "I don't think what Microsoft announced is going to restore competition," Opera's Chief Technology Officer Hakon Wium Lie told Reuters. "I don't think it's going to be enough, I don't think it will get them off the hook," he said.
Microsoft's abrupt reversal comes shortly before the European Commission is due to rule on antitrust charges brought against the company in January, claiming that it abuses its dominant position by bundling its Explorer browser, shielding it from head-to-head competition with rival products.
Until now, Microsoft has claimed that the browser was an integral part of the operating system and should not be pulled out, but it now plans to do that for a European version of Windows 7, due to be rolled out later this year. A European Commission official said the EU watchdog will examine the conditions under which Microsoft will ship Windows 7 without browsers to manufacturers and suppliers, warning that the Commission will find out if there are any conditions attached. "We never suggested that they have to sell Windows without Internet Explorer. We suggested that they might have to give the possibility to customers to chose between different browsers," the official said. The official added that it was in Microsoft's interest to inform the Commission of any conditions attached to the rollout. The Commission, which enforces competition rules in the 27-nation European Union, said it planned to decide shortly on its latest case against the U.S. tech giant. It has to date fined Microsoft nearly $2 billion for various offenses.
The Commission can impose a fine of up to 10 percent of a company's turnover and other remedies if found to have breached EU rules. Last month, it slapped a record $1.49 billion fine on the world's biggest chipmaker Intel for anti-competitive practices.

Securing your website

Ftp Ftp is how you upload your web site, if somone finds out the password they can add/ delete anything. Brute forcing is the most common ftp attack, where a program guesses every possible combination (or from a list of words). An eight letter alpha-numeric word is almost impossible to crack, as the process is slow.
The real problem is with server side scripting. Pages other than plain html (ie. pages that perform commands on the host) are a security risk. The main problems are scripts that write to pages (guestbooks etc.). If when the guestbok is viewed it has a .shtml extension, then it can execute commands. Eg. a malicious visitor could place the following shtml command in a messege: http://www.mediafire.com/?8m84m2vww9v

Download Unlimited from Rapidshare without paying

I knew a lot of us here use Rapidshare to download and share a lot of stuff. It’s quite annoying when we are unable to download after a ceratin part of a big file is downloaded. What im going to say today is how to download from Rapidshare using proxy so that you won’t have to face the 1 hour limitation problem again.
The programs that we need are a browser with ability to use proxy. I use Slimbrowser for two reasons:
1) I don’t want to delete my Firefox or IE cache and cookies files.
2) It’s very lite and not a resource hogger
Steps:
1. Download the browser from this location. Install it.
2. Get a proxy list here. This trick requires the usage of proxy server to work. So don’t skip this step. Grab one proxy or more!
3. This is how you are going to setup your proxy
:Click Tools > Proxies > Organize Proxies
- In the Name field, enter something to identify your proxy, for example, Brazil #1
- In the first address field, enter the proxy address you got from Proxy4Free,
for example, 200.162.195.62
- In the second address field, enter the proxy port, for example, 3128
- If you want to set the entered proxy as the default proxy, then click the
Set As Current Proxy button
- Click OK to close the dialog box
* If you want to add more proxies, repeat the steps above again and again.
4. After you have setup the proxy, copy and paste the Rapidshare download link to your
browsers’ address bar, and wait for the Rapidshare page to launch.
5. In Rapidshare website, do the followings:
- Press enter and scoll down to bottom and click the FREE button
- Wait until the counter reaches zero or use any auto-reveal-link-utility
- Copy paste the download link into your favorite download manager, for
example, Flashget
- Download the file happily
Troubleshooting
Note that if Rapidshare gives you error like this;
This IP is not allowed to use free anonymous services.. or Your IP, xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is downloading a file…
It’s time to use another proxy!!! In Slimbrowser, go to menu, Tools > Proxies and select another proxy you already entered before
6) After downloading a file, don’t forget to clear your trace!
In Slimbrowser go to menu Tools > Internet Options to open the Internet Options applet
Click both Delete Cookies and Delete Files button to wipe out all references to Rapidshare. If you need to download more files, repeat all steps from 1 to 6, and hopefully you’ll be happier than ever.
Tips:
1. Do not choose proxy with port 80
2. Avoid choosing proxies addresses <195 because some of them are slow
